DS_Store Cleaner is a simple and effective Mac utility for finding, cleaning, and deleting .DS_Store files from folders and subfolders you select. macOS Finder automatically creates .DS_Store files to save folder view settings and other metadata. Over time, these hidden files can accumulate on your Mac, external drives, network storage, shared folders, and project directories. They may clutter archives, appear in Git repositories, cause version control conflicts, or reveal unnecessary folder metadata when files are shared with other people or operating systems. When you copy, sync, archive, upload, or share folders, .DS_Store files may appear where they are not wanted. This is particularly inconvenient when: • Sharing folders with Windows or Linux users • Working with Git and other version control systems • Preparing ZIP archives or project deliveries • Using external drives and network storage • Keeping development, design, and media folders clean DS_Store Cleaner removes this unwanted metadata without affecting the actual contents of your folders. Drag one or more folders into the app or choose them using the folder selection dialog. DS_Store Cleaner receives access only to the folders you explicitly select. The app scans each selected folder for files named exactly .DS_Store. If subfolder cleaning is enabled, it also searches the folders contained within your selection. Matching files are removed using standard macOS file operations. Documents, photos, videos, source code, applications, and unrelated hidden files remain untouched. After cleaning, the results history shows how many unwanted files were removed from each selected folder. Select a cleaning result to view the individual filenames and paths or inspect any errors. .DS_Store cleaning is always active. Additional file types can be enabled individually in Settings and are disabled by default: • Apple ._ companion files, often created on external drives, network storage, and non-Apple file systems • __MACOSX metadata folders generated in certain ZIP archives • Windows Thumbs.db thumbnail cache files • Windows desktop.ini folder configuration files These optional settings make it possible to remove related macOS and Windows metadata while keeping the app focused on safe folder cleanup.
