The vault locks automatically the moment you switch to another app. PROJECTS & ENVIRONMENTS Organize variables by project and tag each one with its environment: Development, Staging, Production, or Custom. Filter the list instantly to see exactly what you need. Link variables to multiple projects — a shared DATABASE_URL can belong to both your API and your worker process. IMPORT FROM .ENV FILES Point KeyStack at any project folder and it scans for .env, .env.local, .env.development, .env.staging, .env.production, and .env.test. Preview every variable before importing, with duplicates flagged automatically so nothing gets overwritten by accident. Each import is scoped to the project you choose. EXPORT WHEN YOU NEED IT Export any selection of variables to a .env file with one click — the save panel defaults to your project folder and pre-fills .env.local as the filename. Export a .env.example (keys only, no values) to check into source control. Or copy the whole set to the clipboard in KEY=value format; the clipboard clears automatically after 30 seconds so secrets don't linger. Instantly see which keys exist in Development but are missing from Production — the most common source of "works on my machine" bugs. START FAST WITH STACK TEMPLATES New project? Choose from built-in templates for Next.js + Supabase, Next.js + Postgres, Django + Postgres, Rails + Postgres, Node.js/Express, and Firebase. The template pre-populates the right variable names with descriptions and marks secrets accordingly — so you know exactly what to fill in. ROTATION REMINDERS — WITH IN-APP TRACKING Set a rotation interval on any secret (30, 60, 90, 180, or 365 days). KeyStack delivers a macOS notification when it's time to rotate — and tapping the notification brings you straight to that variable. Inside the app, overdue variables are flagged with a red warning badge directly in the list. A one-click "Needs Rotation" filter shows everything due or overdue at a glance. Once you've rotated a secret, mark it done — the schedule resets automatically. BATCH OPERATIONS Select multiple variables at once and act on the whole group: copy as a .env block, export to file, link to another project, schedule rotation across all of them, or delete with a confirmation prompt.
