It is 1am. You reach for the app you swore you'd stop opening. A troll is standing in front of it.

Trollgate puts a curfew on the apps that keep you up. After your chosen hour, opening a guarded app doesn't open the app — it summons a troll, and the troll would like a word. Answer three riddles correctly and you may pass. Get two wrong and the gate stays shut. The friction is the point.

No lecture. No streak to shame you. No chart of your failings. Just a large, unbothered troll standing between you and your worst twenty minutes of the day.

WHO'S ON THE GATE

Eight trolls keep watch, each with their own manner and none of them in a hurry. The Officer, who shall allow it but shan't enjoy it. The Judge, who finds your request tedious. The Butler, at your service, reluctantly. The Farmer, who would like to know what you want. And others, equally unimpressed.

HOW IT WORKS

Choose an app to guard and set a curfew hour. Open it after curfew and a troll appears instead of the app. Answer three riddles to be let through. Two wrong answers and the gate holds until you've had a moment to reconsider.

WHY IT WORKS

Willpower is in short supply at 1am. A brief obstacle, manned by someone who plainly does not care whether you get in, is usually enough to remind you that you didn't really want to.
