IO DICOM Tools is a professional DICOM workstation for macOS — built for imaging engineers, PACS administrators, and clinical informaticists who need fast, deep inspection of DICOM files and network connectivity without a full PACS installation.
Data Browser
A three-column study/series/instance browser with right-click context menus for view, metadata inspection, anonymize, C-STORE send, and delete. The metadata inspector shows every DICOM tag with human-readable names and dictionary fallback for private tags. Structural issues are highlighted inline — jump directly from a flagged tag into the Validator with one click.
DICOM Validator
The most thorough file validation available outside a dedicated QA system:
Structural byte-walk — verifies every declared tag length against actual file bytes
VR format validation — checks each tag's value against DICOM PS3.5 rules for its Value Representation
Required tag audit — confirms type-1 UIDs and key patient identifiers are present and non-empty
Pixel module consistency — detects photometric mismatches and bit-depth conflicts
Frame-0 render probe — confirms the full pixel pipeline works, not just that tags are correct
Non-fatal parse diagnostics — surfaces malformed or private tags that cause silent failures downstream
Launch Validator from the Data Browser, a Metadata sheet, a Viewer failure, or directly from Finder. Each finding shows the exact DICOM tag, group, and current value. Copy a plain-text findings summary for vendor escalation in one click.
DICOM Image Viewer
Full-window viewer with pan, zoom, rotation, flip, and adjustable Window/Level. Right-click drag adjusts WL/WW precisely. Render failures surface a structured summary — unsupported transfer syntax, codec error, or missing pixel data — so you know the exact cause immediately. Escalate any failure directly into the Validator.
Network Destinations & Connectivity Testing
C-ECHO — verify a DICOM node is reachable in one click
C-FIND — query at Study, Series, or Instance level with patient name, ID, accession, date, modality, and UID filters
Modality Worklist (MWL) — query scheduled procedures; defaults to today's worklist
C-GET — retrieve studies to your local datastore; files are indexed and appear in Data Browser automatically
C-MOVE — send retrieval requests to a configured destination AE
TLS support — all operations support TLS with optional client certificates and custom CAs
Protocol Activity Log
Every network session is captured as a structured timeline with association negotiation, DIMSE steps, and release or abort in one card. Drill into raw PDU hex dumps, command-set field decoding, multi-fragment PDV reassembly, and session-scoped trace export for vendor escalation.
Local Storage SCP
Run a DICOM Storage SCP on your Mac with configurable AE title and port. Received objects are stored and indexed automatically — no separate server process needed.
Open .dcm files directly from Finder. Window size and position are remembered between sessions.
Subscription
Full access requires an annual subscription with a 7-day free trial. After the trial, the subscription auto-renews at the listed price unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the renewal date. Manage or cancel anytime in your Apple ID account settings.
