Before start making custom DIY Joystick controller clean the old dirty paint with rotary cleaning tool. Now your joystick is plastic color. 
Be ready to paint it with spray paint. 
And than painting finished, use stencil paint masks and apply nice clean clear painting on your gamepad. 
Wow your joystick looking wonderfull but not finished yet. Use all masks and paint them all in order. 

Spray varnish and shine it after the masks are done.
